We stopped in Pontiac, Illinois for gas and were greeted by
a very friendly gentleman who was also filling his tank. He asked where we were
from in Ontario and if we were doing Route 66. He insisted that we needed to go
into town and find the Route 66 Museum. It was well worth the stop. On our way
into town we chanced upon a display of vintage cars, some of which would never
drive again and some that, with the right funds, you could drive off the lot. We
even met the mayor of Pontiac in the museum. He introduced himself as Bob the
Mayor, so Bob said he was Bob the Vacationer. The only problem is that if we
make too many more stops of this length, we’ll never get to New Mexico! We
enjoyed the Pontiac Auto Museum and these little art cars that appeared on many
street corners. I even found a quilt in the museum. This town was well
decorated with murals. They had a festival of sorts inviting artists to come
and paint the outsides of many of the buildings.
| Glen: Here's your engine! |
Way to cool! The engine looks like it might be a late '70s turbo Pontiac, but it's hard to tell. The trip looks really exciting! Thanks for updating the blog when you can! Love you both!
ReplyDeleteHey Glen,
ReplyDeleteThis is what was on the display card:
The Turbo 301 was the first turbo charged V8. It kept a Pontiac motor in the Trans Am for an additional 2 years after the 400 was discontinued. It is autographed by the engineer who invented it; Jim Lyons. We worshipped at Marble Falls this morning: you and Ashley made quite an impression on the folks here! Love you too!
